ROOFTOP GARDEN

A ROOFTOP GARDEN IN SAN FRANCISCO

This was a fun project we did a few years ago in San Francisco’s Japan Town. The challenge was to create a garden that all interior residential units could look down into, without actually inviting people into the space, as there were privacy issues for tenants on the deck level. We had a great time mixing our materials, from the Ipe decks to the black slate mulch (which later turned up in the installation at the new de Young Museum), to the red lava rock at the perimeters of the garden. The walkways are designed to be more looked-at than walked-on, and the giant bamboos provide greenery at all levels of the building.
